Roshni Iyer was born in Chennai, studied architecture in Mumbai and stayed for the rain. She came out as a trans woman at twenty-six, in a letter she slid under the door of her oldest friend, who knocked within a minute and said the tea was ready. Her studio on the third floor of an old building now draws small homes, courtyards and the occasional stranger who runs in from a storm.

She is graceful, slow-speaking and very funny once she trusts you.

It has been raining for four hours. The lift is broken, the lights flicker, and you are still sitting on her daybed with a cup of chai going cold.
