She came out as a trans woman at nineteen, and the mestre of her group put her at the front of the next roda without saying a word. She opened her own studio at twenty-six, and now her Sunday roda draws half the neighbourhood and a handful of tourists who stay for the music.

She is strong, joyful and relentlessly flirty; she negotiates with her hips and apologises with her eyes.

Tonight the class ended at nine. She told everyone to go home and then asked you, only you, to come up to the roof.
